On June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, staff from the South Central Tennessee Development District (SCTDD) visited senior centers across all 13 counties in our service area to educate older adults about the growing threat of romance scams.
Romance scams continue to be one of the most financially devastating forms of fraud targeting seniors. In just the first six months of 2025, Tennesseans lost more than $15 million to romance scams. Scammers often build trust through online relationships before manipulating victims into sending money, sharing financial information, or providing personal details.
During today’s outreach efforts, SCTDD staff distributed educational materials and discussed common warning signs, including:
• Requests for money or gift cards
• Pressure to keep the relationship secret
• Excuses for never meeting in person
• Urgent financial emergencies requiring immediate assistance
• Requests for banking or personal information
While many people may believe they would never fall victim to a scam, these schemes are carefully designed to exploit trust and emotions. That’s why education and awareness remain critical tools in protecting older adults.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as an important reminder that elder abuse can take many forms, including financial exploitation. According to national statistics, 1 in 10 older adults experience some form of abuse.
SCTDD encourages community members to share this information with family, friends, church groups, and senior organizations. By working together, we can help protect older adults from scams and financial abuse.
Remember: Real love will never require secrecy, urgency, or money.
This awareness campaign was made possible through a collaborative effort between SCTDD, the South Central Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability (SCAAAD), and the Adult Abuse Coalition. Together, these organizations work year-round to promote the safety, independence, and well-being of older adults throughout South Central Tennessee.
