The Pouring Spot: A Safe Place for Giles County Youth

How one Pulaski center is building belonging, support, and daily nourishment for local youth.

For nine years, The Pouring Spot has offered young people in Pulaski and Giles County a place of welcome, stability, and care. Founded by Renee Malone, it has become more than an afterschool space—it is a place where children and teens are encouraged, supported, and reminded that they matter.

That need was clear from the start. In its early days, The Pouring Spot regularly welcomed 50 to 60 children, filling an important gap for youth in the community.

Today, the center continues to serve local youth, especially middle school students, by offering both a safe haven and practical support. Two retired teachers help students with homework, providing steady encouragement beyond the school day.

Currently, 25 children attend regularly, and the results are encouraging: 15 of those students have recently made the honor roll. It is a clear example of what can happen when young people are supported, fed, and believed in.

At its core, The Pouring Spot exists to motivate children, invest in their future, and serve through daily acts of care.

Metal Shelving with Food Donations

Like many grassroots programs, it also depends on steady support for food, utilities, and daily operating costs.

Support from a Community Development Block Grant focused on food insecurity has made a meaningful difference. The grant was awarded to Giles County and distributed among several local beneficiaries, including The Pouring Spot.

Commercial Freezer and Refrigerator

The funding helped provide a commercial freezer and refrigerator, metal shelving, a stove, and a large commercial sink—equipment that now supports a free daily meal for every child who comes through the door. There is no admission fee and no salary taken, only a strong commitment to serving Giles County youth.

Ms. Malone said the grant did more than provide equipment, it helped build the foundation needed to keep the work growing.

The Pouring Spot is community-led and community-supported, and donations of food or other needed items can help keep children fed, engaged, and cared for.

Its open-door approach is part of what makes the center special, giving young people a place where they feel welcome, known, and supported.

Children need both food and encouragement, and The Pouring Spot provides both. For Giles County, it is more than an afterschool program—it is a place of belonging, nourishment, and hope.
