Columbia, TN — South Central Area Transit Services (SCATS) is starting 2026 with several forward-thinking initiatives, including the launch of a new quarterly training day for drivers and staff.
With more than 120 drivers across the region, it can be challenging to reach everyone with the training required to maintain the highest standards of driver and rider safety. To address this, SCATS has piloted a new training model where drivers and office staff gather quarterly to review routine training topics, safety practices, and compliance updates.
The training was led by Roberta Morrow, Safety and Compliance Manager; Terrie Garcia, Transportation Director; and Jenny Green, Deputy Transportation Director, with support from the SCATS team.
During the event, partners demonstrated new equipment, including a wheelchair lift and grab bar, designed to enhance rider accessibility and safety.
The day also marked a special milestone for the organization. For the first time, SCATS recognized employee service anniversaries, celebrating drivers who have dedicated 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of service. Their commitment reflects the strong foundation of the SCATS program and its mission to serve the region.
Additionally, SCATS introduced new transit software that will modernize operations by transitioning from paper logs to electronic logs—allowing drivers to focus more on the road and their riders, and less on paperwork.
Overall, the training day was a great success. Thank you to all of the drivers and staff who participated and continue to support the mission of SCATS.
